The Belfast Aikikai was founded in March 2010 by Judith McSpadden, 1st Dan Aikikai. It is affiliated to the Irish Aikikai Aikido originally established by Cyril Lagrasta, 4th Dan Aikikai. All yudansha grading examinations take place under the direction of Philippe Gouttard, 6th Dan Aikikai. Grades are recognised by the Aikikai headquarter in Tokyo.
Seminars are regularly held in Belfast and Dublin with high ranking instructors from abroad including Philippe Gouttard 6th Dan, Christian Tissier 7th Dan, Luc Mathevet 6th Dan and Marc Bachraty 5th Dan. Regular in-house seminars are also scheduled throughout the year with Dublin Aikikai instructors, such as Michael O'Donovan, 3rd Dan Aikikai. Members of the Belfast Aikikai often travel to Europe for seminars and Aikido summer camps.
